Amazon Believes Smart Glasses Can Help Drivers Save Time on Deliveries

The glasses are designed to assist drivers in navigating from their vehicle to the correct door

Amazon aims to help delivery drivers navigate obstacles on their way to your door, and the solution might lie in a new pair of smart glasses. If adopted, these glasses could help drivers save valuable seconds on each delivery.

Amazon’s success largely hinges on its speedy delivery times, though the company has faced plenty of criticism for its aggressive pursuit of efficiency. Now, a new report reveals that smart glasses are among the latest ideas Amazon is exploring to enhance the delivery process.

According to Reuters, these glasses are still in development and are envisioned as tools to help drivers navigate efficiently from their vans to customers’ doors. They could offer turn-by-turn directions off elevators, around obstacles like gates, or even in the presence of aggressive dogs. While it’s hard to imagine relying on smart glasses to dodge a territorial canine, for delivery drivers, such features might prove invaluable.

The report notes that while development is ongoing, the project’s future depends on the success of testing and may not progress further. In response, Amazon stated, “We are continuously innovating to create an even safer and better delivery experience for drivers. Beyond that, we don’t comment on our product roadmap.”

Amazon drivers would likely appreciate more detailed delivery instructions, especially when navigating complex buildings or apartment complexes. However, there are several hurdles to overcome if this technology is to be effective.

For one, Amazon needs to create a practical system that helps drivers navigate the entire delivery network. They’ll also need to persuade drivers to actually wear the glasses. The glasses must be compatible with corrective lenses as well. Lastly, Amazon could face challenges related to regulations and privacy, as these devices could potentially record while drivers move around.
