Sorry, fans—if you hoped to grab one of the 70 Speedtops, they’re already gone

The BMW Speedtop, an ultra-limited special model derived from the 8 Series, made its debut at Villa d’Este this past May. Despite being presented as a concept, BMW confirmed plans to produce just 70 units of the shooting brake, all of which were claimed immediately, according to CEO Oliver Zipse.
Zipse revealed during BMW’s first-half 2025 earnings call that the Speedtop “immediately sold out” after its Lake Como unveiling, as reported by BMW Blog. While official pricing remains under wraps, Zipse hinted at a record-high figure, with sources estimating roughly $500,000 per car.

The Speedtop reimagines the 8 Series coupe with unique body panels, an elongated wagon-style roof, and a hatchback rear. Under the hood lies BMW’s most powerful V8, almost certainly the 617-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter from the M8, paired with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

This marks BMW’s second 8 Series-based special for Villa d’Este, following last year’s Skytop, a targa-roof coupe limited to just 50 units. While slightly less rare, the Speedtop will remain a collector’s gem—likely spotted only at events like Monterey Car Week.
With demand for exclusive, low-volume projects surging, BMW appears to be carving out a niche for Villa d’Este specials, and hints suggest more radical M-branded creations could follow. Enthusiasts are already hoping for a modern M1 revival.
