With a 41.3% sales surge in 2024, the automaker has likely overtaken Ford and Honda in total global sales

BYD experienced remarkable growth in 2024, selling 4.27 million vehicles—a 41.3% increase from the 3 million sold in 2023. Despite this impressive performance, the company is not expected to overtake Tesla as the top seller of battery-electric vehicles.
The Chinese auto giant sold 1,764,992 EVs in 2024, a modest 12% rise from the previous year. Plug-in hybrid sales, however, soared to 2,485,378, marking a 72.8% increase over 2023.
December was a standout month, with a record-breaking 509,440 vehicles sold. While Tesla has not yet disclosed its 2024 delivery figures, it is projected to have shipped around 1.81 million vehicles, retaining the EV sales crown. Meanwhile, BYD is poised to surpass Ford and Honda in total 2024 sales, securing its place among the world’s largest automakers.
According to Bloomberg, the majority of BYD’s sales were in China, with about half a million vehicles sold in international markets.

BYD’s rise in recent years has been nothing short of remarkable. Not long ago, it was a modest brand offering uninspiring vehicles in China. However, with the help of heavily subsidized EV programs from the local government, BYD has built a significant manufacturing presence and introduced several attractive models. The company also operates a range of sub-brands that target different segments of the market.
In addition to its vehicle success, BYD is a major player in the battery industry. As the second-largest battery supplier in China, it provides battery packs to companies like Toyota, Nio, and Tesla. In the past year alone, BYD installed a total of 194.7 GWh of batteries in vehicles and energy storage systems.
