Ferrari to Purists: Manuals Are History, Find One Secondhand

Ferrari hasn’t produced a manual-transmission car in over ten years

Ferrari stopped offering manual gearboxes after the 2012 California, where only a handful of stick-shift convertibles were ever sold. The low demand wasn’t the only reason for the end of the gated shifter, though. In 2016, former tech chief Michael Leiters made it clear: no manual could match the performance of a dual-clutch automatic.

Still, diehard enthusiasts haven’t given up hope.

Ferrari’s response? Look backward. When asked if the company had plans to revive the manual, Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Enrico Galliera said:

“We already have it, in many of our classic cars… Buy and restore our fantastic classics.”

Ferrari even offers driving programs using vintage models to reintroduce customers to the art of manual shifting. Galliera added,

“We encourage clients to discover the beauty of driving a classic car. Many people don’t even know how to use a manual anymore.”

But there’s still a glimmer of possibility for the future. Earlier this year, Ferrari’s Chief Product Development Officer Gianmaria Fulgenzi hinted that a manual could return—possibly for a limited-run Icona series model. These ultra-exclusive cars, like the Monza SP1/SP2 and Daytona SP3, are already aimed at the brand’s wealthiest clients—many of whom are reportedly asking for a manual option.

A modern Ferrari with a manual would stand out, both as a rarity and a collector’s dream. And while Porsche has proven that high-end manuals can succeed, Ferrari faces unique hurdles: emissions standards, integration with advanced safety systems, and an already jam-packed order book stretching into 2027.

Still, if enough buyers are willing to shell out a small fortune, a manual Ferrari might just come back—for one last run.
