Europeans can now use the system hands-free for up to 25 hours on various eligible highways.

While Tesla’s semi-autonomous driving systems continue to garner the most attention, Ford has made significant progress with its BlueCruise system. The European Commission has approved Ford’s driver-assistance system for use in 15 European countries, marking a major stride for the brand.
The Level 2 ‘hands-off, eyes-on’ system is already available in Germany, the UK, and Spain. Expanding to over a dozen additional countries will make it more versatile and ideal for long trips across the continent.
The Mustang Mach-E is currently the only Ford model in Europe equipped with the latest version of the BlueCruise system. However, the European Commission’s approval does not allow owners to drive hands-free everywhere. The system is limited to approximately 83,000 miles (around 133,000 km) of designated highways across Europe, known as Blue Zones.
Ford states that the longest uninterrupted stretch of highway where BlueCruise can be used extends from Sweden to Italy, covering nearly 3,000 km (about 1,864 miles). Travelers on this route will be able to use BlueCruise for over 25 hours continuously.

BlueCruise manages steering, acceleration, braking, and lane positioning while monitoring road markings, speed signs, and traffic conditions. A driver-monitoring system ensures drivers remain attentive, even when their hands are off the wheel. The system is available for purchase on all new Mustang Mach-E models, and in the future, earlier Mach-E models in select countries will be eligible for the system through a software update.
“We believe BlueCruise can make highway driving easier and more enjoyable, whether in stop-and-go traffic or on a long road trip. This recent ruling allows us to offer even more customers access to BlueCruise across Europe,” said Ashley Lambrix, BlueCruise general manager at Ford. “Expanding the availability of Blue Zones beyond Great Britain, Germany, and Spain is a significant milestone for us, enabling customers to use BlueCruise for multi-country road trips.”
