GM to Manufacture New Presidential ‘Beast,’ With Chevy-Based Escalades

The Secret Service Director met with GM executives in Michigan last week to discuss the agency’s new SUVs and the President’s limousine

For years, if you spotted a convoy of blacked-out, heavy-duty SUVs transporting America’s most high-profile figures, chances were they were Chevrolet Suburbans in a reinforced trim. However, change is on the horizon, bringing a new badge up front. The U.S. Secret Service is now considering a different vehicle for its next-generation armored transport—one that swaps the iconic Chevy bowtie for Cadillac’s crest.

According to reports, the Secret Service is in discussions with GM to develop a new fleet of armored SUVs. These vehicles will be based on the Chevy Suburban but will feature Cadillac Escalade badging and design cues. Additionally, GM is working on the next iteration of the presidential limousine.

However, given the complexity of custom-built, heavily armored vehicles, this project will take time before it materializes.

Talks regarding the new SUV fleet took place last week at GM’s Global Design Center in Warren, Michigan. Secret Service Director Sean Curran met with GM executives to review potential advancements and discuss the agency’s evolving needs.

Photos from the event, shared by the agency on its social media channels, suggest that the modified vehicle could be a version of GM Defense’s Suburban Shield with Cadillac Escalade styling.

The full-size SUV features thick-wall tires and displays both the presidential and U.S. flags on the hood. Expected upgrades include armored glass, reinforced body panels, and advanced onboard security systems.

The U.S. Secret Service shared the following statement on Facebook:

“Transporting our leaders and dignitaries requires constant innovation. As threats evolve, we continue to explore emerging technologies to ensure our armored vehicles provide the highest level of safety for our protectees. This week, Secret Service Director Sean Curran met with GM executives to discuss advancements that could benefit the next generation of armored SUVs.”

Next-Generation ‘Beast’ in Development

Beyond the armored SUVs, General Motors is also tackling a more complex and high-stakes project: developing the next version of the presidential limousine, commonly known as “The Beast.”

According to Reuters, GM secured a $14.8 million contract in September 2024 from the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service to design the new model—a detail that had not been previously disclosed. By the time the vehicles are delivered through 2029, total costs could reach $40.8 million.

While specific details remain classified, a Secret Service spokesperson told Reuters:

“Our engineering, protective operations, and technical security teams spend years developing the state-of-the-art framework required for these highly advanced vehicles. At this stage, we are too far out to provide specific costs or delivery dates.”

The current presidential limousine, introduced in 2018, was custom-built as a Cadillac sedan atop a GMC TopKick heavy-duty truck chassis. Weighing approximately 20,000 pounds (9,100 kg), it is designed to withstand extreme threats. Previous versions debuted in 2001 and 2009, each incorporating progressively advanced protection and technology.

As the U.S. Secret Service continues to modernize its fleet, GM remains a key partner in ensuring the safety of the nation’s highest officials through cutting-edge armored vehicle design.
