Honda’s Prelude coupe return may deliver a 300-hp hybrid powertrain, simulated gear shifts, and aggressive styling

A familiar nameplate is making a comeback with a fresh, modern twist. Honda is preparing to launch the new Prelude coupe, which is expected to arrive in Europe, Japan, and North America in the fall of 2025. This hybrid coupe is positioned as a sleeker and more dynamic alternative to the Civic, built on upgraded foundations and outfitted with features designed to appeal to driving enthusiasts.
Although Honda hasn’t officially confirmed any performance variants, recent rumors suggest that Type S and Type R versions could already be in development.
According to a report from Japanese outlet Goo-net, a sportier Prelude Type S might debut around fall 2026, about a year after the base model. A more aggressive, track-focused Type R variant is rumored to follow in 2027, offering enhancements in design, chassis, and powertrain.

What to Expect from the Performance Trims
Our speculative renderings envision the top-tier Prelude Type R standing out with visual upgrades such as wider fenders, custom alloy wheels, extended side skirts, and a redesigned front bumper featuring larger air intakes. At the rear, expect a more pronounced diffuser and a GT-style rear wing, completing the aggressive performance aesthetic.

Inside, the cabin would likely emphasize the sporty character with bucket seats, extensive red accents, and exclusive digital instrument graphics tailored for the Type R.
Perhaps more intriguing is the speculation around the powertrain. Early reports indicated the Prelude Type R might share the Civic Type R’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. However, more recent rumors point to a different direction—a more powerful iteration of Honda’s twin-motor, self-charging hybrid system.

This shift aligns with tightening emissions regulations, especially in Europe, where the gas-only Civic Type R is slated to be discontinued by 2026, only four years after its 2022 debut.
The upgraded e:HEV hybrid system could potentially deliver over 300 horsepower by combining a turbocharged combustion engine with electric motors. This would place it close to the Civic Type R’s current output of up to 325 hp (245 kW / 330 PS).
No Manual, but Simulated Shifting
A notable change will be the absence of a traditional manual transmission. Honda’s e:HEV system does away with a conventional gearbox, but the standard Prelude will feature an “S+ Shift” mode. This mode uses sound effects, torque modulation, and paddle shifters to simulate gear changes. In the Type R variant, this simulated shifting is expected to be further refined to provide a more immersive driving experience.

Handling and Chassis Upgrades
The top-level Prelude model is also anticipated to receive a reworked chassis with a lowered suspension, wider track widths, additional structural bracing, and upgraded brakes. These improvements aim to sharpen responsiveness and enhance road feedback, aligning with the car’s sporty intentions.
Awaiting Official Confirmation
While the idea of a 2027 Prelude Type R is exciting, it remains speculative for now. Creative Trend, a Japanese publication, spoke with a Honda dealership that reportedly had no information on performance-oriented Prelude variants, at least through 2026.
With the official launch of the new Prelude scheduled for this fall, more concrete details are likely to emerge soon. Until then, enthusiasts and fans alike will be watching closely to see just how far Honda plans to take the revival of one of its most iconic models.
