Lamborghini Driver Becomes First in Australia Fined for Missing ‘Supercar’ License

South Australia launched a special license for “Ultra High-Powered Vehicle” drivers on December 1

A man in Australia has been fined for driving a Lamborghini Huracan STO without South Australia’s newly introduced ‘ultra high-powered vehicle’ license, which became mandatory on December 1.

The special license, known as the ‘U’ license, was developed following a 2023 incident in which a 15-year-old pedestrian was killed by the driver of a Lamborghini Huracan. The license applies to vehicles under 4,500 kg (9,920 lbs) with a power-to-weight ratio exceeding 276 kW or 370 hp per tonne (2,200 lbs).

It didn’t take long for police to catch the first offender under the new license rules. A blacked-out Huracan STO was stopped at 7:30 a.m. on December 1—just 7.5 hours after the legislation took effect. The driver was issued an expiation notice for operating the vehicle without a valid license for this class. While the exact fine amount is unknown, the maximum penalty for a first offense is AU$2,500.

Interestingly, the car initially caught the attention of police because it lacked a rear number plate. Had the 36-year-old driver properly displayed the plate, he might have avoided being pulled over altogether.
