An online document, reportedly from the UAW, claims it will feature an engine called “Legend.”

Ford has a lineup of potential Mustang variants that could make surprise debuts at any time. The previous generation saw the return of the Mach 1, and it’s been over a decade since the last Boss 302. While these are beloved models, Shelby Mustangs tend to steal the spotlight—so a leaked document, allegedly from a local UAW branch, claiming a new GT500 is on the way certainly caught our attention.
The memo, shared on the Mustang subreddit, states that the Dearborn Engine Plant (DEP) will add an afternoon shift to its “niche assembly line” to handle increased production—supposedly for the 2026 Mustang Shelby GT500.
This is the same facility where Ford builds the F-150 Raptor R’s engine. The document also states: “I can’t wait until we start building engines for such an iconic vehicle with an engine that will be named Legend.”

The only identifying detail on the memo is a URL linking to UAW Local 600, which represents workers at the plant. We reached out to the union office to verify the document’s authenticity but have not yet received a response. We’ll update this story if we do.
When contacted by a known automotive media outlet, a Ford spokesperson declined to comment on speculation.
Ford wasted no time expanding its Mustang lineup after launching the seventh generation in 2023, introducing high-performance variants like the Dark Horse and GTD. More recently, it unveiled the EcoBoost RTR, borrowing parts from the Dark Horse.
If Ford follows its usual pattern, these special editions will stick around for a few years before making way for new models—possibly including a new GT500. Time will tell.
