This luxury self-propelled trailer minimizes range loss for EV drivers towing it
The Lightship AE.1, previously known as the L1, is now officially available for purchase and in production. Priced at $250,000, it ranks among the priciest trailers on the market. Its standout feature is its self-propulsion capability, which dramatically reduces the range loss typically experienced by EVs while towing.
Founded in 2020 by former Tesla employees Ben Parker and Toby Kraus, Lightship officially launched operations in 2022. Since then, the company has been focused on bringing its vision to life. The original L1 concept trailer showcased groundbreaking innovations, including a built-in battery pack, electric motors, a telescoping upper section, and an aerodynamic design to minimize drag.
The AE.1 Cosmos Edition, the production-ready version of the L1, is now available for $250,000. Buyers need to place a $7,500 deposit to secure their spot, as only 50 Cosmos Edition trailers will be produced. Once these are sold, Lightship plans to roll out additional variants.
The initial version of the trailer is fully equipped to sleep up to four people and includes a bathroom. Key features include a 77 kWh battery pack, roof-integrated solar panels, an induction cooktop, a refrigerator and freezer, a microwave and convection oven, a dishwasher, auto-leveling, highway range assist, and a rear hitch. Additionally, the AE.1 is compatible with NACS charging, comes Starlink-ready, and offers a premium off-grid experience.
Lightship plans to expand its product lineup next year with a new trim called the Atmos. Priced at $184,000, it offers a range of approximately 300 miles. In 2026, the company aims to launch two additional trims, starting with the Panos.
The Panos, starting at $151,000, will deliver around 140 miles of range. Later that year, production of the Terros is expected to begin. Priced at $125,000, the Terros won’t add any range but will retain the telescoping pop-up design shared by the other Lightship trailers.
While all trim levels are available for pre-order, only the $250,000 Cosmos Edition is expected to enter production by late next year.
