Mercedes Aims to Charge Your Car While You Enjoy Your Coffee

The German brand is introducing DC fast chargers at Starbucks locations, starting with the US West Coast

Mercedes-Benz envisions a new twist on the Cars and Coffee experience. Instead of showcasing an AMG GT at a weekend car show, why not make daily pit stops at your local Starbucks in an EQE? While you savor a Tripleshot Espresso, you can plug into a 400-kilowatt fast charger in the parking lot. This way, you and your vehicle can recharge simultaneously.

If all goes as planned, Mercedes will install fast chargers at over 100 Starbucks locations across the U.S. While there are many more Starbucks stores to cover, this initiative begins with a focus on the West Coast, starting with Interstate 5, which runs through California, Oregon, and Washington. Given that Starbucks originated in Seattle, this region is a fitting starting point for the collaboration.

Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging North America is leading this collaboration. The team unveiled its first 400-kW fast charging station (outside of Starbucks) in November 2023 and aims to partner with various companies to introduce fast chargers in unique and innovative locations.

“The collaboration between leading brands like Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks will enhance the charging experience for all EV drivers,” said Andrew Cornelia from Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging. “Together, we aim to make EV charging as enjoyable as having your favorite Starbucks drink, by creating engaging and intentional experiences that make drivers genuinely excited to plug in.”

While Cornelia may not have experienced the long lines at Starbucks, the partnership is set to introduce DC fast chargers at key Starbucks locations along major routes. The initiative kicks off on the West Coast but will expand nationwide over the next 12 to 18 months. Details about the launch of the first Starbucks charger and its location have yet to be announced.

This effort is part of Mercedes’ broader goal to achieve a fully carbon-neutral automotive fleet and manufacturing process by 2039.
