Mitsubishi’s upcoming EV for the American market will essentially be a rebranded Nissan.

To grow its worldwide electric vehicle offerings, Mitsubishi will collaborate with other companies, such as Foxconn, to produce an EV for Australia

Mitsubishi is significantly boosting its electric vehicle offerings with two new models expected in the latter half of 2026, each aimed at a distinct market. First, North America will receive an electric crossover drawing inspiration from the upcoming Nissan Leaf. Separately, Mitsubishi is partnering with Foxconn to develop another EV specifically for the Australian market.

The North American EV, anticipated in US and Canadian dealerships by summer 2026, will closely resemble the new Nissan Leaf, featuring a similar crossover profile with a sloping roof and identical LED lighting.

Beyond Mitsubishi badging, other visual differences remain unclear. Built on the same CMF-EV platform as the new Leaf, this EV will have a single electric motor, meaning no all-wheel-drive option, similar to the larger Nissan Ariya. However, Mitsubishi has confirmed a NACS charging port and a targeted range exceeding 300 miles (482 km).

In a reciprocal arrangement, Mitsubishi is assisting Nissan with a plug-in hybrid version of the Nissan Rogue (X-Trail), expected in 2026 as a rebranded Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. This Rogue PHEV will join gasoline and self-charging hybrid versions, with unique styling to differentiate them. Mitsubishi’s overarching goal is to “strengthen its partnership with Nissan” through these electrified vehicle initiatives.

Beyond EV expansion, Mitsubishi’s “Momentum 2030” plan includes a revamped retail approach and an expanded dealer network in North America, aiming to increase sales across the region.

For Australia and New Zealand, Mitsubishi has signed a memorandum of understanding with Foxtron, Foxconn’s EV subsidiary, to develop a new Mitsubishi EV. This unnamed model will be developed by Foxtron and manufactured by Yulon Motor in Taiwan, slated for introduction in the second half of 2026.

Mitsubishi promises “excellent driving performance as an EV” and an “advanced infotainment system.” While not yet confirmed, this model could be a rebadged version of the Pininfarina-designed Foxtron Model B. Although the deal appears near completion, both companies will continue discussions before finalizing it. Mitsubishi’s broader EV strategy involves its own models for ASEAN, Renault-based models for Europe, and Nissan-based models for North America, in addition to the Foxconn collaboration for Oceania.
