Nissan’s Upcoming Juke Might Not Go Fully Electric

Nissan may add gas-powered options to the Juke, which was once planned as EV-only

Nissan is preparing to launch an all-electric Juke in Europe next year, opening a new chapter for its popular compact crossover. But while the EV is on the horizon, it might not be the only version offered.

As European sales trends challenge full electrification, Nissan appears to be rethinking its EV-only approach. Rather than phasing out the current combustion model, the company may keep gas-powered Jukes in production alongside the EV, echoing strategies seen across the industry where ICE options help bridge the transition for customers not ready to go fully electric.

The third-generation Juke will ride on a shortened CM-EV platform from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance—shared with the Nissan Ariya and Renault Megane E-Tech—and will be built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the UK. Its radical design is inspired by the Hyper Punk Concept, giving the compact SUV a futuristic edge.

Initially, Nissan planned to replace the combustion Juke entirely with the EV. But in a conversation with Auto News, Alexandre Armada, head of product planning for Nissan Europe’s small cars, suggested that strategy may shift.

“Given the very different path of transition to electrification across Europe, keeping the internal combustion Juke in production is an option on the table,” Armada said.

Sales numbers back the move. The Juke is currently Nissan’s second-best seller in Europe, trailing only the Qashqai, which has moved 78,397 units this year. With the electric Juke expected to command a higher price, maintaining the current 1.0-liter 114-hp gas and 143-hp hybrid variants could help sustain volume.

As for the EV, details are still under wraps. Reports hint at battery options ranging from 40 kWh to 87 kWh, depending on market needs, giving the Juke flexibility to appeal to urban drivers and longer-range commuters alike.

When it arrives, the Juke EV will enter a crowded compact electric crossover segment, taking on rivals like the Jeep Avenger EV, Kia EV3, Renault 4 EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, Citroën C3 Aircross, Peugeot e-2008, and the upcoming Ford Puma Gen-E.
