Over 400,000 Toyota Trucks Recalled Due to Risk of Rolling Backward

Moisture can seep into the reverse lights of some Tundras and Tundra Hybrids, causing them to fail

Toyota is well-known for building reliable cars, trucks, and SUVs—but even its rugged Tundra pickup isn’t immune to the occasional quality issue. The company is recalling nearly 500,000 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid models due to a fault that could lead to damage around the tailgate area—and potentially harm anything or anyone nearby.

The issue stems from moisture getting into the reversing lights, which can cause them to fail. The recall affects approximately 443,000 trucks from the 2022–2025 model years. Toyota will replace both rear light units free of charge at dealerships.

As part of the recall, technicians will also inspect the wiring harnesses on affected vehicles and repair any connectors or cables showing signs of corrosion. Toyota plans to begin mailing notices to owners in July.

While all new vehicles sold in the U.S. since before the current-generation Tundra launched in 2021 are required to have reversing cameras, those cameras rely on the reverse lights to function effectively in the dark. And since backup cameras themselves are no strangers to reliability issues, it’s all the more reason for Tundra owners to schedule the fix.

A Minor Issue Compared to a Major One

This light issue is minor compared to the serious engine problem Toyota faced in 2024, which led to the replacement of nearly 100,000 engines in Tundras and Lexus LX models due to crankshaft bearing failures caused by leftover machining debris.

Still, despite these setbacks, Toyota’s Tundra continues to earn praise for long-term durability. In a recent study of the longest-lasting vehicles in America, the Tundra topped the list, with a 37% chance of reaching 250,000 miles (402,000 km)—leading a top five made up entirely of Toyotas.
