Subaru Aims to Conquer Europe with Rebadged Toyotas, Including an Electric Outback

All three EVs were jointly developed with Toyota but sport Subaru’s distinctive front-end design

Subaru is ramping up its electric vehicle efforts in Europe with plans to introduce three new battery-electric crossovers by 2026. Co-developed with Toyota, these models combine proven EV hardware with Subaru’s own distinctive — and often polarizing — styling. The lineup includes the Uncharted, a refreshed Solterra, and the E-Outback, Europe’s counterpart to the Trailseeker.

Subaru’s Expanding EV Lineup

Until now, Subaru’s European EV presence has been limited to the Solterra. These three new additions will triple the brand’s electric offerings in the region. All are underpinned by the e-Subaru Global Platform, Subaru’s adaptation of Toyota’s e-TNGA architecture.

The Subaru Uncharted

Leading Subaru’s new charge is the Uncharted, essentially Subaru’s take on the Toyota C-HR+. It features a distinctive front-end design inspired by the updated Solterra, including signature headlights and a sculpted bumper. Rugged wheels complete the exterior updates. Inside, it gets a squared steering wheel, unique trims, and shares tech like the 14-inch infotainment screen and dual wireless chargers with its Toyota sibling.

Buyers can opt for FWD or AWD configurations. Power tops out at 338 hp (252 kW / 344 PS). Entry-level versions use a 57.7 kWh battery offering up to 276 miles (444 km) of range, while a larger 77 kWh pack boosts this to 363 miles (584 km) with FWD and 292 miles (470 km) for AWD models.

The Return of the Solterra

Subaru’s first EV returns with a fresh face, upgraded tech, and more power. Twin electric motors now deliver 338 hp (252 kW / 343 PS), a substantial boost over the original model. A larger 73.1 kWh battery provides over 310 miles (500 km) of range.

Styling tweaks focus on the front end, with slimmer LEDs and a cleaner bumper design. Gloss black fender flares distinguish the EU-spec version, though it’s unclear if higher trims will match North America’s body-colored finish. Inside, the Solterra gets a new 14-inch infotainment display and enhanced driver assistance features.

Meet the E-Outback: Subaru’s Largest EV Yet

The E-Outback serves as Europe’s version of the Trailseeker, itself related to the Toyota bZ Woodland. Larger and roomier than the Solterra, it boasts a cargo area big enough for four suitcases. Subaru has only previewed the Trailseeker’s styling, so the E-Outback is expected to look nearly identical apart from minor details like amber indicators.

Under the skin, the E-Outback packs 377 hp (280 kW / 380 PS) from its dual-motor setup, paired with a 74.7 kWh battery good for 279 miles (447 km) of range. It retains Subaru’s signature Symmetrical AWD, X-Mode off-road tech, and 210 mm (8.3 inches) of ground clearance. Like the Solterra, it offers 1,500 kg (3,307 lbs) of towing capacity.

Rollout Timeline

The facelifted Solterra will arrive by late 2025, with the Uncharted and E-Outback following in early 2026. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
