Subaru’s next electric model for the North American market is expected to be built on the same platform as Toyota’s forthcoming compact SUV

The next-generation Outback won’t be the only Subaru making its global debut at this month’s New York International Auto Show. The automaker has just dropped a teaser for another upcoming model: the all-new 2026 Trailseeker.
So, what exactly is the Trailseeker? At this point, Subaru is keeping details close to the chest. All we know for sure is that it’s an electric SUV, and we’ve been given a shadowy teaser photo showing part of the tailgate and a cladded rear bumper. Intriguing? Maybe. Revealing? Not quite.
Here’s what Subaru has officially said:
“Get ready to meet your newest adventure-ready sidekick from Subaru: the all-new 2026 Subaru Trailseeker EV SUV. See it in person at the 2025 New York International Auto Show, coming soon.”

While much remains under wraps, what we do know is that Subaru has previously confirmed it’s working with Toyota on a new compact electric SUV platform. This joint effort is set to deliver models for markets in Japan, Europe, and North America.
There’s been speculation that the Trailseeker could be Subaru’s version of the recently unveiled Toyota C-HR+, which is coming to the U.S. next year. But based on current teasers, it looks like both brands are developing distinct compact EVs rather than rebadged versions of the same vehicle.

Toyota has also teased its own 2026 compact electric SUV, which will share underpinnings with the Trailseeker—similar to how the bZ4X and Subaru Solterra are mechanical twins. The Toyota version appears more traditional in design, with a sharper front, upright rear, and RAV4-like roof rails. Subaru’s take, in contrast, is expected to lean into its rugged DNA, likely featuring more aggressive cladding and off-road-oriented styling.
The best part? We won’t have to wait long for answers. The New York International Auto Show opens on April 17, so stay tuned for the full reveal of Subaru’s next electric adventure vehicle.
