The Ford Mustang Just Hit a Speed Bump with Its Worst Sales Year Ever

The iconic pony car took a 9.5% dive in 2024, trailing far behind its electric sibling, the Mach-E

The sales figures are in, and it’s tough news for the Ford Mustang. The legendary pony car saw just 44,003 buyers last year, making 2024 officially the worst sales year in its 60-year history. Adding insult to injury, the Mustang was outsold by over 7,000 units by its electric cousin, the Mustang Mach-E—a vehicle many pony car purists refuse to acknowledge as a “real” Mustang.

This isn’t just a bad year; it’s part of a troubling trend. Mustang sales have been steadily declining for years, with a brief uptick in 2023. The previous low point was 2022, when 47,566 Mustangs were sold.

But the final quarter of 2024 revealed just how steep the decline has become—sales dropped a staggering 43.4% compared to the same period last year, with only 7,518 units sold. To put that into perspective, it’s not far off from where the Chevrolet Camaro ended before it was discontinued.

Meanwhile, the Mach-E is speeding ahead. The electric crossover recorded 51,745 sales in 2024, with a particularly strong fourth quarter, moving 16,119 units—a 35.6% increase year-over-year.

Ford’s aggressive pricing and incentives have undoubtedly played a role in boosting Mach-E sales amidst a cooling EV market. Heading into 2025, the Mach-E starts at $38,490 for the base Select trim with rear-wheel drive. For comparison, the gas-powered 2025 Mustang EcoBoost starts at $33,515, unchanged from last year, though the GT has seen a price hike, now starting at $47,055—$2,600 more than before.

As for Ford, the company has yet to comment on the Mustang’s plummeting sales. It’s unclear if supply chain or production issues may have contributed to the decline. We’ll update this story if new information becomes available.
