The New Audi A5 Introduces Sleeker Looks, Replacing the A4

The new A5 and S5 are offered in both a practical five-door sedan and a versatile Avant wagon configuration

Audi has launched a new lineup of A5 and S5 models, incorporating a variety of mildly electrified powertrains. Unlike their predecessors, the previous two-door Coupe and Cabriolet, the new A5/S5 replaces the ICE-powered A4/S4 and is available in Sedan and Avant body styles.

This strategic adjustment simplifies Audi’s naming strategy, assigning odd numbers to gasoline models and even numbers to EVs. Alongside the A4 Sedan and Avant, the new model effectively replaces the A5 Sportback, with the A5 Sedan now offering five doors, including a practical tailgate.

The use of the A5 nameplate brings about more dynamic styling, marked by sharper details and improved proportions. The discontinued A4 received criticism for its conservative design compared to competitors such as the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, prompting Audi designers to elevate their approach.

Highlights of the new Audi A5 include a more assertive stance with widened fenders, sleek LED headlights flanking a narrower grille, and generously sized bumper intakes reminiscent of high-performance Audi Sport models. The taillights receive a technological upgrade with advanced OLEDs.

The Audi A5 is the inaugural production model to utilize the new PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) architecture, an evolved iteration of the MLB Evo (Modular Longitudinal Matrix) platform. It features an elongated wheelbase of 2,900 mm (114.2 inches), an increase of 68 mm (2.7 inches) compared to its predecessor, enhancing space between the axles.

Specific dimensions for overall length and width have not yet been disclosed, but they are anticipated to reflect the extended wheelbase.

Enter the new A5, and you’ll find a thoroughly modern interior overhaul. Audi has replaced button clutter with a sleek, sophisticated design that includes standard features, elevating the A5 into premium territory.

At the heart of the new A5 is a curved panoramic display, a technological marvel combining an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster with a substantial 14.5-inch touchscreen for the Audi MMI infotainment system. An enhanced head-up display keeps focus on the road, while an optional 10.9-inch screen for the front passenger adds a touch of luxury (and keeps them entertained on long journeys). Comfort is prioritized with Audi promising more cabin space than ever before.

The A5 debuts with a new Mild Hybrid System, avoiding the full electric trend for now. It starts with the reliable 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI four-cylinder engine, upgraded with a variable-geometry turbocharger (VTG) and refined combustion process for improved efficiency. In Europe, power options include 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) for front-wheel drive and 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) for quattro models.

Alternatively, Europe and other markets offer an updated 2.0-liter TDI turbodiesel, featuring the new 48-Volt MHEV plus system. This engine produces 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, with an additional 24 hp (18 kW / 24 PS) boost from the electric motor, enhancing acceleration and fuel efficiency. The mild-hybrid TDI is paired with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, available in both front-wheel drive and Audi’s renowned quattro all-wheel drive configurations.

A New Mild Hybrid System

The A5 steers clear of the all-electric trend, at least for now, starting with the dependable 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI four-cylinder engine. This engine receives enhancements such as a variable-geometry turbocharger (VTG) and optimized combustion processes to boost efficiency. In Europe, you can choose between two power outputs: 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) for the front-wheel-drive version or 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) for the quattro variant.

The second option in Europe and select markets is an updated 2.0-liter TDI turbodiesel, featuring the new 48-volt MHEV plus system. This diesel engine benefits from a 48-volt mild-hybrid system (MHEV plus), maintaining emissions control. The base engine delivers 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, with an additional 24 hp (18 kW / 24 PS) boost from the electric motor.

This setup translates to livelier acceleration and improved fuel economy. The mild-hybrid TDI pairs with a dual-clutch automatic transmission and offers a choice between front-wheel drive or Audi’s renowned quattro all-wheel drive.

More Power for the S5

For those seeking greater excitement, the S5 ramps up performance with an updated 3.0-liter V6 TFSI engine. This robust engine also benefits from the MHEV plus mild-hybrid system, delivering a formidable 362 hp (270 kW / 367 PS) – 13 hp more than previous S4 and S5 models. Power is distributed to all four wheels via a responsive S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission, complemented by Audi’s quattro sport differential with torque vectoring for confident cornering.

Audi asserts that refined suspension and steering configurations result in “more precise” and “largely neutral handling”. Enthusiasts can opt for the adaptive suspension, offering a broader range from comfort to sportiness.

The new Audi A5 and S5 family will be available for order in Europe later this month, with initial deliveries slated for November. In Germany, pricing for the Audi A5 Sedan starts at €45,200 ($49,279).

What About North America?

Details regarding the US-spec A5 are currently under wraps. Audi will unveil pricing, availability, and specific engine options at a later date, so stay tuned for updates.
