The Volkswagen Golf R Now Approaches a $50,000 Price Tag

The top-tier Golf sees a $1,435 price increase in its base model, and the 2025 GTI also comes at a higher price

Volkswagen has refreshed the GTI and Golf R for 2025 with subtle styling tweaks inside and out, plus a power boost for the Golf R’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. These updates come with higher prices, including a notable $1,435 increase for the Golf R.

With VW’s $1,225 destination charge, the 2025 Golf R now starts at $48,325. It delivers 328 horsepower to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. While VW adds 13 more horsepower over last year, it also removes the manual transmission—now, the DSG gearbox is the only option.

The GTI follows suit, seeing a $480 price bump to a base MSRP of $33,670. It retains the same 241-hp 2.0L turbo engine driving the front wheels. Like the Golf R, it’s now only available with a seven-speed DSG, though paddle shifters allow for manual gear selection. Still, it’s not quite the same as executing a perfectly timed downshift into a corner.

2025 Volkswagen GTI and Golf R Pricing:

ModelPrice
GTI S$33,670
GTI SE$38,645
GTI Autobahn$42,105
Golf R$48,325
Golf R Black Edition$49,640

Both models receive mild exterior updates, including redesigned headlights and lower fascias. Inside, they share a new 12.9-inch touchscreen running VW’s latest MIB3 infotainment system.

The GTI benefits from a more user-friendly layout that replaces the unpopular haptic steering wheel controls with physical buttons—a change not extended to the Golf R. However, VW is quick to highlight that, at 328 hp, the Golf R is the most powerful production Golf ever.

Will buyers accept the price hike? Sales suggest enthusiasm is still strong—Golf R sales rose 29.6% while GTI sales surged nearly 50%. Still, their combined 15,268 units remain a small fraction of VW’s total sales, dwarfed by the brand’s SUV lineup. Whether demand remains high without a manual option will become clear when the 2025 models hit dealerships later this year.
