Toyota Confirms Production of Century GRMN SUV

A prototype previewed the high-performance flagship of the Toyota Century SUV in September 2023.

During last year’s debut of the Toyota Century SUV, the automaker showcased a hotter GRMN variant as a one-off. Now, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda has confirmed it will enter production and eventually be offered in China in addition to Japan. This announcement came during a meeting between Toyoda and Century owners from China. The event, part of the flagship SUV’s launch in the Chinese market aimed at “young leaders,” included a question about whether a GRMN-branded version was planned.

Toyoda responded, “The Century I own is the only GRMN for now. Next, I want to create a GRMN that many people around the world can enjoy.” When asked about its introduction to the Chinese market, Toyoda confirmed, “We’re planning to,” but added, “We’ll need to wait a bit.”

Toyoda was referring to the Century SUV prototype with GR emblems, first revealed in September 2023. This same vehicle was also displayed as part of Morizo’s Beloved Cars Collection at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2024.

The Century GRMN SUV prototype features a redesigned body kit with exposed carbon fiber accents, optional sliding doors, and sleek black 22-inch alloy wheels.

While Toyota hasn’t revealed specific details about the prototype’s specs, it’s likely to have a tuned suspension, enhanced brakes, and a more powerful engine. The GRMN badge typically signifies top-tier performance and handling within Toyota Gazoo Racing’s lineup.

The standard Century SUV is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 plug-in hybrid producing 406 hp (303 kW / 412 PS) via an e-CVT gearbox and Toyota’s E-Four Advanced AWD system. A GRMN variant could boost performance, positioning it against elite SUVs like the Aston Martin DBX707, Lamborghini Urus, and Mercedes-AMG G63.

Based on Akio Toyoda’s comments, the sportier Century SUV may launch in Japan first before expanding to other markets, including China.
