Traffic stop leads to discovery of raccoon holding meth pipe

The raccoon is safe at home, but its owner’s well-being is not assured

Police officers in Springfield, Ohio, encountered an unusual situation during a recent arrest. After pulling over a woman suspected of having a warrant, a pet raccoon in her vehicle unexpectedly led them to drug paraphernalia.

As Officer Branham returned to the car, he noticed Chewy, a pet raccoon, in the front seat. More surprisingly, Chewy was holding a meth pipe in its mouth. The officer’s bodycam footage captured his laughter as he observed the raccoon seemingly interacting with the pipe.

Chewy then appeared to produce a second pipe. This prompted officers to search the rest of the vehicle, where they discovered a significant quantity of methamphetamine, crack cocaine, and three used glass meth pipes. The woman, Vidal, now faces charges related to these findings.

Authorities are also investigating the legality of owning a raccoon as a pet in this case. The incident highlights the unpredictable nature of police work, with an unexpected intervention by a raccoon leading to the discovery of illegal drugs. It is hoped that the raccoon will be placed in a more suitable and legally compliant home.
