The current generation of the gas-powered VW Golf will remain available until the decade concludes

The VW Golf GTI, a legendary hot hatch, is embracing the electric future. Volkswagen’s boss, Thomas Schafer, confirmed that an electric Golf GTI is planned for release towards the end of the decade, following the announcement of an ID.3 GTI.
This electric Golf GTI will be built on VW’s SSP platform. However, fans of the current combustion-powered Golf needn’t worry yet, as it will remain available until at least the end of the decade. Despite the electric GTI still being some years away, its development is already in progress. Schafer emphasized that it will stay true to the GTI spirit, retaining the beloved front-wheel drive layout.
Speaking to Auto Express, Schafer described the upcoming electric Golf GTI as a “monster car,” expressing his satisfaction with its development and assuring that it will be exciting and authentic, a true GTI.

While a physical prototype hasn’t been built yet, the electric Golf GTI’s dimensions and basic platform are finalized, though the final design is still evolving through various iterations.
Continuing the GTI tradition, the electric version will be front-wheel drive, unlike the rear-wheel drive ID.3 GTX. Managing the immense power in a front-wheel drive setup without excessive torque steer will be a challenge, but the electric Golf GTI could potentially match the 322 hp of the ID.3 GTX, similar to the all-wheel drive Golf R. Sophisticated software systems will be crucial for efficient power delivery.
Furthermore, Schafer also confirmed that an all-electric Golf R is under development. This model will maintain the all-wheel drive system of the current Golf R, promising even greater power and performance, thus continuing the high-performance Golf legacy in the electric era. The electric future of the Golf lineup is on its way and promises an exciting driving experience.
