Where are Wranglers Being Made?

The Stellantis Group which owns Jeep, manufactures all their Jeep Wranglers in the United States. Specifically, Jeep Wranglers are made in the North Plant of the Toledo Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio. All Wranglers have been made at the Toledo Assembly Complex since 1992.

During the infancy of the Wrangler series, most of the initial units were produced in Brampton, Ontario, Canada for roughly 6 years, from 1986 – 1992.

The Toledo Assembly complex:

  • Has a floor space 3.64 million square feet
  • Runs two, 10-hour shifts six or seven days per week
  • Has 6,236 hourly and 243 salaried workers, 6,479 in total.
  • Makes all Wranglers sold worldwide.

In 2020 PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) officially merged to create Stellantis North America.

Prior to the two companies merging, Fiat Chrysler, the company that acquired Jeep and the rest of AMC’s properties in 1987, stated that they will continue to manufacture and assemble all of the Wrangler units in Toledo, Ohio.

The decision was made to ensure that the American heritage and identity of the Jeep remain intact.

Are Wranglers for the US Market Produced in the US?

Jeep Wranglers for the US market are produced in the U.S. at the Toledo Assembly Complex, Toledo, Ohio and have been since 1992.

The Toledo plant has been producing vehicles since 1910 and is now owned by Stellantis North America.

The original production line of Wranglers was located in Brampton Assembly, Ontario, Canada from 1986 -1992.

By 1992, the Brampton Assembly was shut down and all unit production was moved to the massive facility in Toledo.

Aside from some optional components, the Wrangler is manufactured and assembled 100 percent in their Toledo, Ohio, manufacturing plant.

Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, is investing heavily to ensure the Jeep is an American vehicle forever.

Are Wranglers Being Assembled in the US?

Since 1992, Jeep has manufactured and assembled Wrangler units in Toledo, Ohio.

The original Wrangler, known as the Jeep YJ, was designed and developed by AMC, the original owners of the brand.

Upon Chrysler acquiring AMC and its brands in 1987, production continued in Brampton Assembly, Ontario Canada.

By 1992, all production lines were transferred to the Toledo Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio.

How Can You Check Where a Specific Wrangler Was Produced?

Since 1992, all Wranglers have been assembled in Toledo, Ohio.

However, if you would like to know more about your vehicle’s batch or check if it is part of a recall campaign, the vehicle identification number (VIN) would be your best bet.

The VIN is a code that is exclusive to your vehicle and is used by service advisors and warranty officers to identify and keep track of your vehicle.

You can also use your VIN to check for parts and add-ons compatibility with your model.

The VIN can be compared to a fingerprint in that no two VINs are the same. This code is a string of 17 characters comprised of numbers and letters.

To find your Wrangler’s VIN, check the left side of the casing of the dashboard.

Mark Allen, head of Jeep Design, the team in charge of developing new models for Jeep’s vehicle line-up, has worked on numerous designs in a small office in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This is the most likely location where Jeep Wranglers are designed.

Jeeps design history however dates back as far as World War 2.

Karl Probst, a freelance vehicle designer from Detroit, developed the first military prototype of the Jeep which was deployed in 1941, but this model was never confirmed to be the direct predecessor of the modern-day Wrangler.

The Wrangler’s first generation design should therefore be attributed to American Motors Corporation (AMC), the company that introduced the model in 1986.
