Has it been 18 months since the third row was first previewed? Is it finally making its way into a production model?

Pickup trucks have reached unprecedented sizes, and Ram seems eager to capitalize on their dimensions by considering the addition of a third row of seats. With trucks increasingly replacing sedans and SUVs for numerous consumers, introducing three-row seating could potentially position trucks to even replace minivans in some markets.
Ram has been considering this concept for a while. In 2023, they unveiled the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept, featuring a small pair of third-row seats that could fold out from the rear cab wall. Initially, it seemed likely these seats would go into production, but the subsequent road-ready Ram 1500 REV unveiled shortly after did not include them. Now, it seems Ram has revived the idea.
Recent patent filings uncovered by an automotive media outlet at the United States Patent and Trademark Office suggest the automaker is strongly considering bringing these seats into production. The seats depicted in the patents closely resemble those seen in the concept, featuring padded backrests mounted on the rear wall.
The seats remain compact, similar to those on the concept, and according to the patents, they are highly versatile. The patent highlights that the backrest and folding seat can be swiftly removed from the rear wall to create extra cargo space. When detached from inside the truck, these seats could potentially be mounted on the tailgate or secured to other flat surfaces on the vehicle’s exterior.

As always, it’s important to note that just because a carmaker patents a new feature, it doesn’t guarantee it will go into production. However, Ram has not only showcased the folding third-row pickup seats on a concept but also patented them, suggesting a strong intent to bring them to market.
Nevertheless, their implementation might be some time away. The upcoming Ram 1500 REV, expected to reach customers later this year, features its second row of seats mounted at the rear bulkhead, typical of most pickup trucks. This configuration currently leaves no space for a third row. Introducing a third row of seats would likely require Ram to extend the truck’s cab or reposition the second row forward.
