How Long Do Genesis G90 Last? (12 Important Facts)

The G90 is a fullsize luxury sedan that made its US debut in 2016.

It’s Genesis’s most luxurious model offering plenty of value in a pricey segment, upscale designs and silky-smooth engines.

If you’re wondering about the G90’s average lifespan, this article is here to help.

Here is the short answer to how long the Genesis G90 lasts:

The Genesis G90 is expected to last between 200,000 and 250,000 miles with proper maintenance and good driving habits. With normal car usage, this means a G90 should last for 13 to 17 years on average before repair costs become uneconomical.

How Many Miles Can You Expect from a Genesis G90?

The G90 was launched for the 2017 model year so there’s not a huge amount of data surrounding the longevity of these cars, but we’ve done some digging and early reports look promising.

On the used car website Car Gurus we found a first-year model with 129,555 miles on the clock and numerous other G90s that had crossed the 100k mark and still going strong.

No huge surprise there though, for a car like the G90, hitting 6 figures on the odometer should be an easy feat and realistically we’d expect well-kept models to last over 200,000 miles.

On the Genesis Owners forum one driver had this to say:

“I bought mine [G90] on June 2017 with 3000 miles. Current mileage is 59,325. It’s a fleet car (limo/car service) It has been flawless so far.”

J.D. Power has given the G90 the #1 spot in their large premium car rankings with a quality and reliability score of 91/100 which they’ve labeled as “Best”.

In recent years both Genesis and their parent company Hyundai have received strong praise from auto review sites:

  • Repair Pal ranks Hyundai 4th out of 32 car brands for reliability.
  • In 2020, J.D. Power declared that “Genesis ranks highest among luxury brands” in terms of dependability.

Keep in mind the lifespan of your G90 will ultimately be decided by you, the owner.

Conservative driving habits and routine maintenance are the key factors that will ensure your car lives a long life.

Genesis offers a reassuringly long 10 yr/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a basic warranty of 5 yr/60,000 miles.

What Problems Do Genesis G90 Have?

The Genesis G90 has been around long enough now to start showing some of its flaws.

Windshield and Rear Window

The 2018 G90 was recalled due to glass bonding strength that is reduced over time. This means there was an increased chance the windshield and rear window may detach whilst driving.

Engine

The 2018 G90 was also recalled for oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold which increases the risk of a fire.

Trunk

One owner has described how the trunk on his G90 will not open by pushing the button inside the car or the button on the fob.

“They [Genesis] replaced everything at least once and many more times and still won’t work.”

Fuel Economy

The G90 has poor fuel economy for the segment.

Paint Quality

There have been some paint quality issues raised by Genesis owners, it’s definitely something to look out for.

Historically the white pearl color has more issues with paint defects, peeling, bubbling, etc. when compared to other colors.

What is High Mileage for a Genesis G90?

A Genesis G90 with over 100,000 miles is considered high mileage, most parts will have some degree of wear and tear and the powertrain warranty will have expired.

A well-kept G90 with over 100,000 miles isn’t necessarily a bad buy and it will still be a better option than one with a fraction of the mileage that’s had many owners and led a tough life or was sat neglected on the driveway.

If you’re buying a second-hand G90, consider the following:

  • Ensure the car was serviced properly at the correct intervals and the owner can provide documented proof of this.
  • Check for rust (including under the car) or other paint issues such as bubbling or chips.
  • As a general rule, fewer previous owners is better. More owners usually equate to more wear-and-tear.
  • Examine the interior as this tells the story of how well the car was maintained and cared for.

Note: Any car that has averaged a lot more than 15,000 miles per year should also be considered a high mileage vehicle and thus a riskier purchase e.g. a two-year-old car with 90k miles on the clock.

The Genesis G90 has received above-average scores for reliability from both consumers and auto experts. J.D. Power has given the G90 its “Best” score of 91/100 for Quality and Reliability based on feedback from owners.

Genesis is the luxury division of Hyundai and in recent years both brands have been praised for building solid vehicles.

The G90 isn’t perfect – no car is, but if you want a dependable luxury sedan then the G90 is a top pick.

Kelley Blue Book had this to say about the reliability of the G90:

“As much as any machine is reliable, we’d be fine if a G90 was the only vehicle available that could take us to the hospital in the event of a medical emergency.”

The G90 received the following reliability reviews:

  • Kelley Blue Book’s consumer rating index gave the Genesis G90 an average reliability rating of 4.9/5.0.
  • J.D. Power provided the Genesis G90 with an average reliability rating of 91/100.
