2024 Kia Sorento

If you want the most up-to-date looks then the 2024 Sorento is a top pick. This model is part of the fourth-gen and receives a mid-cycle refresh that focuses on appearances.

The biggest changes are up front, where its updated headlights and grille now look more futuristic than ever.

The interior is marginally updated and gets a bigger screen.

Available with front- or all-wheel drive there are two gas engines to choose from.

A 191-hp 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine is standard and a 281-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder is available too.

2023, 2022, and 2021 Kia Sorento

The 2023, 2022, and 2021 are the first installments of the fourth generation and are great options if you are looking to get the latest design, tech and safety features. This generation is so different from the previous one that you’d think it was made by a different company.

All of these models offer ample legroom, an intuitive infotainment system, and a stylish design – inside and out.

There are no major differences between the three model years.

There are 5 main trim levels: LX, S, EX, SX, and SX Prestige.

The standard engine for the LX and S trims is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine (191 horsepower) with an option to upgrade to a turbocharged version (281 horsepower).

The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine is standard for the EX, SX, and SX Prestige trims.

The most popular trim is the SX variant, with a base price of approximately $40,000.

2022 Sorento, Edmunds review:

“I bought my 2022 Sorento prestige a little over a month ago. Honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! This suv has plenty of room, very sleek and amazing features. When driving, it’s like the car isn’t even on because of how quiet it is! I love that it has heated and cooled seats, gas mileage is great. It honestly has the quality you would expect from your high end car brands. I couldn’t be happier with my choice!”

2021 Kia Sorento

2020 Kia Sorento

The 2020 Sorento is the final installment of the third generation – it may lack the new design but it has proven itself to be very reliable.

This family-friendly SUV offers ample features, a stylish and quiet interior and handles better than expected.

New for this particular model year are light updates to the bumpers and exterior lighting.

Based on owners’ reviews, these are the best aspects of the model: appearance, warranty, value, dashboard, driving experience, safety, handling, and steering.

Fuel economy is commendable with EPA estimates at 25 MPG for combined city and highway driving.

Our favorite features are Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and Uvo eServices which allows you to find your parking location, check your vehicle status and send emergency information.

2020 Sorento, Edmunds review:

“I started researching the sorento one year ago. Many reviews faulted the Sorento for being fuel thirsty, heavy and underpowered. I purchased it on the spot and have not regretted it. The v6 has more power than I need. The rear most seats are there if and when I need them. it has more tech than I know what to do with. It rides and handles better than the competition and it is QUIET. I can drive all day and never get tired. What more can you ask for?”

2019 Kia Sorento

The 2019 Sorento is the penultimate third-gen model, it’s convenient, comfy, and abundant in tech and safety features.

This is a reliable SUV that has more standard features than its predecessors.

New for this model year is an 8-speed automatic transmission for the V6 and revised exterior styling.

It comes in 7 trims: L, LX, S, EX, EX Sport, SX, and SX Limited.

If you need a little bit more power and acceleration, we recommend skipping the entry-level versions and go for, at the very least, the EX trim, which comes with a 3.3-liter V6 engine (290 horsepower).

2019 Sorento, Edmunds review:

“Kia might not be the top of mind brand just yet, but do not overlook the Sorento. It’s a ‘just right’ size, and has a very competitive fuel economy. The SX-L is very luxurious inside with the nappa leather and attractive trim. The ‘electronics’ are easy to learn and actually seem way more intuitive than that of the ‘other brands’. Very quiet and comfortable ride…”

2018 Kia Sorento

The 2018 Sorento, while largely the same in terms of features and design compared to its predecessors, is a great pick because it did not inherit the widespread engine-related problems experienced by owners of older models.

It has a premium look, high-quality interior materials, and comfortable seating.

The model has been praised by owners for the following: comfort, reliability, manufacturing quality, seats, interior, value, handling, steering, and safety.

  • Kelley Blue Book: 4.3 / 5.0

2018 Sorento, Edmunds review:

“This 2018 Kia Sorento LX V-6 is perfect for me. I didn’t want a large SUV, and found this vehicle provided ‘just right’ passenger and storage room. Plenty of cubby holes for various gear, enough USB and power receptacles, rear-seat passenger HVAC controls, ease of entry and exit front and rear, lots of passenger room, comfortable seats, plenty of power from the V-6 engine…”

2018 Kia Sorento

2009 and 2008 Kia Sorento

The 2009 and 2008 Sorentos blend city-oriented comfort with off-road capability.

These are the final installments of the first generation and have been praised by auto journalists for their high-quality materials and solid construction.

Fuel economy is 18 MPG for combined city and highway driving based on the EPA’s estimates.

There are 2 trims on deck: LX and EX.

The 2008 model year offers an additional “Base” trim but is identical to the LX in most aspects.

The LX comes standard with a 3.3-liter V6 (242 horsepower) cruise control, air conditioning, 16-inch alloy wheels, full power accessories, cloth seats, and a 10-speaker audio system.

On the other hand, the EX comes with a slightly larger 3.8-liter V6 (262 horsepower) and adds fog lamps, heated side mirrors, leather seating, and a power driver seat.

2009 Sorento, Edmunds review:

“I bought my kia sorento new in 2009. When I first bought it after a while of having it they had to replace the driveshaft, transmission but now it is a very good vehicle. I would suggest to anyone that wants to buy one to do it – overall it is a very nice and roomy and comfy vehicle. I still have my kia and love it everyday. It is very reliable. It is now 2021 and I still have my kia. It now has 165 thousand on it and runs like a new one…”

2009 Kia Sorento

2007 Kia Sorento

The 2007 Sorento is a 1st-gen model that offers an impressive list of standard features, optional four-wheel-drive, and true off-road capability.

This model received significant updates, including a more powerful V6 engine, improvements to the interior and exterior, and a handful of additional standard safety features.

  • JD Power: 78 / 100

2007 Sorento, Edmunds review:

“You can’t buy any SUV for this price with all of the options and performance it offers! The 4WD system is a “true” off-road system unlike the AWD systems found on the CR-V and Pilot. The engine has tons of power and is perfect for towing my boat. The 4WD has been great for the Michigan winters and great gas mileage for an SUV. I am very impressed with my first Kia and it certainly won’t be my last!”

What Are The Worst Years For The Kia Sorento?

2017 to 2011 Kia Sorento

The 2017 to 2011 model years were the most problematic Sorentos produced. CarComplaints.com labeled several of these as “clunkers” however they should all be approached with caution.

These models suffered from various engine problems.

Symptoms included the following:

  • Engine knocking
  • Vehicle stalling
  • Loss of engine power
  • Excessive oil consumption
  • Oil leakage
  • Engine overheating
  • Engine failure

Here is what owners had to say on the NHTSA website:

“Car seized up while driving. No warning light or anything engine just seized. Leaving my six kids and me stranded. Car has always been serviced with Kia “

“While passing a vehicle, the car started misfiring and shut off with the engine locking up. No prior warning given. Very dangerous situation.”

“Replaced engine 6 months ago only to have the same problem again – engine is locked and won’t start, cut off while driving, excessive oil consumption.”

“Total engine failure on highway with no warning. Kia dealership says a piston broke and a valve is stuck open. Total engine replacement required with a cost of $12,000”

There were engine-related recall campaigns for these models to address:

  • Machining errors during the engine manufacturing process may cause premature bearing wear within the engine
  • Engine compartment fuel and/or engine oil leaks that could cause a fire

To be on the safe side we’d recommend models from 2018 onwards.

If you do decide to go with one a 2011-2017 model it’s best to run a VIN check and ensure all recalls have been addressed and have a mechanic take a look to give a second opinion, although this won’t guarantee immunity from engine issues.

2006 to 2003 Kia Sorento

The 2006 to 2003 Sorento model years were not as problematic as the 2017 to 2011 batch but still received a fair share of complaints.

These were the first models to go on sale in the US and they had some teething issues. They are also quite outdated now in terms of features and design.

The main issue was a bolt holding the harmonic balancer pulley to the crankshaft would break off causing serious damage to the engine, belts and pulleys.

On the NHTSA website, here’s what owners had to say:

“While driving at approximately 30 mph, the engine stalled as all of the warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the crankshaft pulley bolt fractured and needed to be replaced… The failure mileage was 83,000.”

“While driving the power steering stopped, we pulled into a gas station, barely missing the fuel pumps. The belt came off. When the mechanic assessed the problem, it was much greater. The harmonic balancer was loose, and the drive pin to the cam belt gear had sheared off. The repairs were costly…”

“The bolt on the crankshaft pulley as well as the pin broke off causing the motor to stop and overheat dumping all the antifreeze and stopping all belts.”

Another common problem with these models is headlight failure. Owners reported having to continually change the bulbs however they would keep blowing.

“Our 2006 Kia Sorento burns out all lights on this car. I have changed the headlights at least 10 times this year alone. We keep extra brake lights in the car because they go out at least every 3 weeks.”

“Had the car 2 years and have to replace the headlight bulbs 3 times. Replaced within last 5 months and now are out again.”

Growing up with a father who was a mechanic I had an appreciation for cars and motorcycles from an early age. I shared my first bike with my brother that had little more than a 40cc engine but it opened up a world of excitement for me, I was hooked. As I grew older I progressed onto bigger bikes and...
